Yutaka Takanashi believes that the photos in his “Toshi-e” (Towards the City) series are documents of equal value to language and ideology. His work can be seen at the Buchmann Gallery in Berlin from September 14 to November 3, 2012.
Back in the sixties, the photographer was one of the founding members of Provoke. The aim of this group – and the photo magazine of the same name – was to find a new visual language that would reflect the transformation of Japanese society, in the post-war years and during the era of the US-Japanese security pact.

With this purpose in mind, the photographer preferred to take quick shots, often photographed through the window of a driving car. It is the blurriness in the pictures that obliterates the ideology and allows the images to become a form of expression in their own right.
