On 29 May 2013, classic and contemporary photography will be auctioned at the Villa Grisebach in Berlin.
The auction offers a wide-ranging selection of works by renowned photographers, from pioneers such as André Kertész to contemporary artists like Hiroshi Sugimoto. One of three well-known vintage prints, Martin Munkácsi’s ‘Brazil, Choked with Coffee’ from 1932 is estimated at 15,000 to 20,000 euros. The image is part of one of Munkácsi’s first major reportages, prior to the Hungarian photographer’s emigration to the US in 1934 and ascent to legendary fashion photographer. Further highlights include Hugo Erfurth’s intense portrait of Otto Dix, capturing the young painter in a stern profile shot. The rare 1920 oil print is estimated at 8,000 to 10,000 euros.
The catalogue is available for viewing online, or can be ordered in print. Bids made in writing, as well as telephone bids, may be submitted until 28 May. With a little windfall and a measure of good luck, an original Diane Arbus or Nobuyoshi Araki could soon be gracing your very own living room walls.
