The image Straight Voice by Yasuyoshi Chiba has been selected as the World Press Photo of the Year 2020. The Japanese photographer reports on East Africa and the Indian Ocean for the international news agency AFP. His winning photograph, which was captured in Khartum, Sudan, depicts a young man reciting poetry during a night-time protest against military violence – his face illuminated by the mobile phones of his fellow demonstrators.

Russian-born photographer Nikita Teryoshin won first prize in the Contemporary Issues (Single Pictures) category. His image, titled ‘Nothing Personal – the Back Office of War’ shows a businessman finishing off the day at an Abu Dhabi arms fair by locking away his display of anti-tank grenade launchers.

Farouk Batiche’s image of a confrontation between protestors and police in Algeria won first prize in the Spot News (Single Pictures) category.
The best entry in Spot News (Stories) was a reportage by Mulageta Ayene, created at the crash site of an Ethiopian airline flight.
Tomek Kaczor’s black-and-white photograph ‘Awakening’ was selected as the Portrait of the Year 2020.

Almost 74,000 images by 4,300 photographers from 24 countries were submitted for this year’s contest. The jury awarded 44 prizes across several categories. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, this year’s winners were notified online, while the traditional awards ceremony in Amsterdam had to be cancelled. However, there are plans to present all winning works in a major exhibition in due course.
