Alexander von Wiedenbeck produced Obsession for Freedom with the M Monochrom at his own initiative. The motivation for Von Wiedenbeck's work was the development undergone by photography over the last ten to fifteen years. In his opinion, this development has moved in the wrong direction and now needs to be corrected.

With his Back to Basics revolution, he wants to counter the fleetingness of photography today. Considering the wealth of images that flood over us every day, the person in front of the camera hardly receives any consideration. As far as von Wiedenbeck is concerned the absolute nightmare is the inhumane posing and the extreme retouching of images.

It was very easy for the photographer to decide to produce a book of his work rather than publishing them digitally. “Depending on what kind of screen you look at, the photographs can appear anything from average to deplorable quality – but they will never be perfect. With a printed book I have control over the final result that everyone will see,” von Wiedenbeck explains.
