When photography meets painting

At first glance, painting and photography appear to be two very different artistic disciplines. Just how closely they are linked is illustrated in the exhibition ‘Painting in Photography. Strategies of Appropriation’ (’Malerei in Fotografie. Strategien der Aneignung’) at Frankfurt's Städel Museum, from 27th June to 23rd September 2012. The exhibition will focus on the influence of painting on the imagery of contemporary photography.

Pictorial photographs
The exhibition will include works by Sherrie Levine and Louise Lawler, both of whom refer to historical paintings for their photographic work. The staged pictures by Jeff Wall, works by Thomas Ruff, and Amelie von Wulffen's paint-treated photographs also illustrate the close connection between the two media.
