The exhibition ‘Closed’ by Polish photographer Patryk Bułhak will be on show at the Leica 6×7 Gallery in Warsaw from 2 August 2019 to 15 September 2019. His series of Iranian portraits offers fascinating insights into life in a sealed-off country.

When Patryk Bułhak visited Iran, the country had been branded part of the Axis of Evil, and was the subject of strict economic sanctions. The Polish photographer, who graduated from the Academy of Photography in Warsaw, consciously avoided Iran’s more prominent destinations – instead setting out to find out more about its rural population. On the island of Hormuz he was able to photograph Bandari women, who conceal their faces behind striking metal masks. In the Zagros Mountains he encountered shepherds and their families, and was able to take part in their daily lives – using body language as their primary means of communication.

The photographer will attend the exhibition opening on Thursday 1 August 2019 (starting at 18.30). The evening will be moderated by art historian Joanna Kinowska.
