The International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York has been awarded a $125,000 grant by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The grant will be used to launch three research conventions, as well as to further develop the ICP’s collaboration with international institutions.
The three research projects – titled ‘What Is a Photograph?’, ‘What is the Image Globally?’ and ‘What Is an Archive?’, – aim to investigate the history and ever-changing status of photography, photographic archives, and the medium’s cultural significance in today’s world. The relevant findings will later be published.
Complementing the scholarly discussions is the exhibition ‘What is a Photograph?’, currently showing until 24 May 2013. From 20 September to 12 January 2014, the ICP will be presenting photographs by Lewis Hine.
