American photographer Peter von Agtmael won the 10,000 Euros Freelens Award with his series ‘Disco Night Sept. 11’. His work reflects both his naive childhood-fascination with war, and the brutality he later witnessed as a war photographer in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Honorable Mentions
Three Honorable Mentions of 1,000 Euros each were awarded to: Tomasz Lazar from Poland for his series ‘Theater of Life’, Sebastian Liste from Spain for ‘Urban Quilombo’, and Bharat Choudhary from India, for ‘The Silence of ‘Others’’.

Sixty portofolios were on display at the former Expo grounds in Hannover. The winners were chosen by a six-strong jury, which included Magnum photographer Thomas Hoepker.
