Born in 1941, Elfie Semotan is known as the Grande Dame of Austrian photography. After training in fashion design, she worked for many years as a model in front of the camera: at the end of the sixties, however, she decided to step behind the camera, achieving world fame thanks to her lyrical fashion photography.
Her photographic compositions were well thought through, combining an interplay of degrees of severity, shapes, colours and original perspectives. By knowledgeably applying different light intensities and structural elements, she created an extremely captivating atmosphere for her pictures.
In addition to working in the area of fashion, Elfie Semotan spent more recent decades exploring landscape photography, interiors and still lifes. She also took artist portraits of, among others, Helmut Lang, Franz West, Marina Abramovic, Louise Bourgeois and Maria Lassnig.
