Equipped with a Leica S2, the concept artist and designer Rolf Sachs took the Bernina Express with the intention of capturing this spectacular route in images for Leica.
The Bernina Express connects Chur in Switzerland with Tirano in Italy. Finished in 1910, this stretch of railroad has 196 bridges, 55 tunnels and climbs to 2253 metres. Since 2008 it is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Sachs's emotional pictures – some static, some in movement –, taken on the four hour journey, show the unique scenery during different seasons of the year. He did not, however, limit himself to documentary-like pictures, but experimented with abstract photography and artistic landscape images.
