"Rodina" is the Russian word for 'home' – and the title of an exhibition of photographs by Irina Ruppert, showing at Berlin's Galerie Kominek from 27 November to 21 December 2012. In her images, the photographer raises the question, what is home? Is it an experience, a yearning, or an actual place?
Ever since the then seven-year-old Irina Ruppert and her family left Kazakhstan to move to Germany in 1976, Irina Ruppert has been looking for the images she still carries within her. The viewer is invited to accompany her on an autobiographical journey in search of her roots, for which she has visited various locations in Russia, Bulgaria, Rumania, the Ukraine, as well as Slovakia, Poland and Kazakhstan. Particularly the changes in those places since the end of Socialism have left strong impressions on the photographer – which she has distilled into atmospheric photographs.
