The Getty Center in Los Angeles are showing photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe in the exhibition “In Focus”, open from 23rd October 2012 to 24th March 2013. A trendsetting artist and provocateur, Mapplethorpe ranks as one of the most important photographers of the twentieth century. The exhibition encompasses displays of his early mixed-media objects as well as portraits, nudes and still lifes.
As a student, Robert Mapplethorp met, and fell in love with, the then-unknown Patti Smith. He became known to a wider audience during the eighties, portaying celebrities such as Andy Wahrhol, Peter Gabriel, and, of course, Patti Smith. His work includes scandalous nude portraits – which were a regular cause for public outrage. The artist’s excessive lifestyle involved drug use and an endless string of relationships with both men and women. Robert Mapplethorp died from HIV in 1989.
