he winners of the 2013 Alexia Foundation Grant have been selected. From among 433 submissions, Abir Abdullah rose to the challenge to win the professional grant's 15,000 euros in prize money. In his work, the Bangladesh-based photographer documented the consequences of fire for Dhaka's working class. In particular in the textile industry, Dhaka's largest field of activity, fire protection measures are often faulty or completely lacking: fires have devastating consequences.
Christian Werner, Robin Hammond, Noriko Hayashi, Alvaro Ybarra Zavala and Jenn Ackermann were among the finalists. The 2013 Student Grant was won by Sara Naomi Lewkowicz for her project “Shane and Maggie” – an intimate series about domestic violence.
About the foundation
The foundation was established in 1988 in honour of photographer Alexia Tsairis, who was killed in the Pan Am Flight 103 terrorist attack. Since then, the foundation has been supporting photo journalism, with the aim of bringing its complexities to the attention of the general public.
