Photographer and film maker Tim Hetherington, who lost his life in Syria in 2011, has been honoured with the McCrary Award for Excellence in Journalism. The award is given out annually by the US Congressional Medal of Honor Society, in acknowledgement of outstanding journalistic contributions.

With his film "Restrepo", which he co-directed with journalist Sebastian Junger, his series "Sleeping Soldiers" and the book "Infidel", Hetherington was an authority on the war in Afghanistan.

From 6 September to 24 November 2013, the Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool is showing images by the late photographer. The exhibition's title – "You Never See Them Like This" – is a quote by Hetherington as he was photographing sleeping soldiers in Afghanistan.
