The Fisheye Gallery in Paris is pleased to present a showcase of works by Kevin Faingnaert: ‘La vallée du Jiu’ (The Jui Valley) will be on display from 31 October to 8 December 2018.
In winter 2018, Kevin Faingnaert spent one month in Romania’s Jui Valley – a region in the south-west of Transylvania whose coal mines once played a significant role in the country’s industrialisation. The trade unions of the Jui Valley repeatedly challenged Romania’s internal politics, most recently with a protest movement in the 1990s. In poignant colour photographs, Faingnaert presents an evocative portrait of a declining region and its inhabitants, whose everyday reality is still inseparably intertwined with the area’s coal-mining history. In the course of his documentary, the Belgian photographer explored the region’s expansive, melancholic landscapes, the relationship between the local population and its environment, as well as the profound political history of ‘La vallée du Jiu’.
