‘Leonard Freed – Made in Germany’: the Folkwang Museum is presenting black and white pictures by the Magnum photographer, from May 11 to September 1, 2013.
Leonard Freed (1929 – 2006) photographed most of a very comprehensive reportage on the newly established German Republic, in 1965. The exhibition at the Folkwang Museum introduces this very important photographic essay with 117 original images. With Made in Germany Leonard Freed paints a very vivid picture of a socially and politically divided Germany, the country of the economic miracle and a conflict of generations.
Freed's reportage follows the tradition of photographic explorations carried out by western photographers, taking a look at the estranged cultural nation of Germany after the catastrophe of National Socialism. His images reflect the success story of the German Republic, telling the story with scepticism, irony, but also empathy.
A reprint of the original edition of Made in Germany will be published by
Edition Folkwang / Steidl.
