In addition to classic fashion photography, which was financially profitable, Avedon was also regularly asked to take portraits for reportages and news articles on famous personalities. The resulting collection of images is a representation of America's cultural and political elite.
From very early on, Avedon was interested in the anonymous street life of both Southern Italy and New York. His reportage-style series, which were not published until decades after they were taken, reflect the photographer's interest in social issues, which also led him to be actively involved in the American Civil Rights movement of the 1960s.
