Vladimir Lagrange Retrospective

September 26, 2019

Moscow’s Lumiere Brothers Center for Photography honours Vladimir Lagrange with an anniversary retrospective, continuing until November 17, 2019.
The Lumiere Brothers Centre for Photography opens a new exhibition season with a retrospective of works by Vladimir Lagrange. Born in Moscow in 1939, Lagrange became known as the definitive photographer of the Thaw – a period of increasingly relaxed censorship in the Soviet Union following the death of Joseph Stalin in 1953. As a result, the landscape of photography shifted from unmitigated depictions of socialist ideals to a humanist approach.

The retrospective comprises more than a hundred photographs spanning from the 1960s to the 1990s. In addition to popular series such as Granny (1961), Goalkeeper (1961), Doves of Peace (1962) and Young Ballerinas (1962), the showcase also includes lesser-known works from the artist’s oeuvre. By following Lagrange’s gaze across four decades, the viewer is able to witness both the country’s transformation and the way in which the photographer’s visual style, themes and presentation evolved through the ages.
