A retrospective of the work of Garry Winogrand (1928-1984) will be showing at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art from 9 March to 2 June 2013.
More than 300 photographs will be on display, divided into three sections: ‘Down from the Bronx’, with images taken in New York from 1950-1971; ‘Student in America’, created during the photographer’s travels throughout the USA; and lastly, ‘Boom and Bust’ – containing photographs taken from 1971-1984, after Winogrand had left his home city of New York.
On his death in 1984, Winogrand left over 6,500 rolls of film containing more than 250,000 images – many of these never before seen photographs are included in the retrospective. After showing in San Francisco, the exhibition will be touring to Washington, New York, Paris and Madrid.
