Following the confrontations at Maidan Square, Spanish photographer Guillermo Cervera decided to travel to Ukraine at the end of February. In Odessa a university professor invited him to a demonstration the separatists held every evening. The leader of the local pro-Russian movement spoke to a crowd of 5000, and Cervera went with him on stage to take a couple of pictures. Following that, when he wanted to leave, Cervera was told to wait until the end of the speech. Then someone asked him in perfect English: “Are you ready?” This was a totally unexpected invitation to speak in front of 5000 people. Completely dumbfounded, Cervera decided to improvise: “Spain is with you … democracy is something that’s difficult to achieve but easy to destroy … you have to fight for it!” According to the photographer, those were his 15 minutes of fame.
The reportage will appear 8th of August, in LFI 6/2014.
