Progress, the final destination?

Share:

From 14th September to 4th November 2012, the 'Kestnergesellschaft' in Hannover, Germany, is presenting the work of American artist Lewis Baltz. The exhibition will include, amongst others, his famous series 'The Prototype Works', 'The New Industrial Park' and 'Candlestick Park', created in the late Sixties and early Seventies. The series depict the scattered settlements, industrial sites and desolate suburbs of California, illustrating the negative impact of post-war economy with objective sobriety.

At the same time, the exhibition shows the changes in his work over time: His emigration to Europe in 1968 marked the beginning of his images being dominated by large, colourful subjects – but even then, a sceptical attitude to progress remains at the heart of Balz's photographs.
