America in Cologne: From September 9 to October 26, 2014, the in focus gallery is presenting In Amerika – 1963-2013, an exhibition with photos by Magnum photographer Thomas Hoepker.
In the first part of the exhibition, the gallery is presenting a selection of photographs of boxer Muhammad Ali. Hoepker spent a number of days with Ali in 1966, working on a story for Stern magazine.
In 1963, the 27 year-old Hoepker travelled over 25,000 kilometres throughout America on assignment for a Hamburg magazine. This also gave him a glimpse behind the sparkling façades of New York's skyscrapers.
The third part of the exhibition shows photographs of New York ranging from the early sixties up to September 11, 2001, and then beyond to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
Hoepker has been working with cameras from the Leica M series for many decades – many of his iconic images were taken with the rangefinder camera. For this reason, Hoepker was honoured this year with the Leica Hall of Fame.
