Kenko PL Finder & C-PL Vernier
By blocking certain portions of visible light, polarizing filters are able to decrease reflections caused by non-metallic surfaces such as water and glass; increase colour saturation and enhance the reproduction of greens in landscape photographs; or intensify blue skies and emphasise the whiteness of the clouds.
Invisible to the human eye, lightwaves have a multitude of possible orientations, from vibrating up and down, to moving back and forth. A polarizing filter will only transmit waves that are vibrating in a specific direction (determined by the chosen setting), whilst suppressing the light coming towards the camera at a 90 degree angle to the direction of polarization.
In order to determine the filter's effect on the image – for instance to eliminate unwanted glare – the photographer simply rotates the filter until the desired result has been achieved. Of course, this is easily done with a mirror reflex camera – but what options are available to owners of a Leica M?
The PL Finder by Kenko offers a straightforward and easy-to-use solution: slotting into the accessory shoe of your range finder camera, it allows you to adjust the desired polarizing effect via a numerical dial. The included C-PL Vernier lens filter features a corresponding dial – so you simply select the same setting on both dials, compose your picture through the viewfinder – and take your perfect shot.
