The German photographer Leonore Mau passed away on 22 September 2013 at the age of 97. In homage to the late artist, the exhibition Second Sight offers an insight into her portrait photography – a genre that was an intrinsic part of her life's work, as well of the travels she shared with writer Hubert Fichte.
The majority of her earlier portraits were created in the social circle of Hubert Fichte, depicting writers such as Ingeborg Bachmann and Jean Genet. Leonore Mau dedicated much of her photographic career to exploring Afro-American religions – her images of sacred places and rituals providing a bridge between foreign worlds and ours.
