Under the title of The Writer as Landscape Photographer, the Altonaer Museum in Hamburg will be showing an exhibition of photographs by Arno Schmidt. The author, who passed away in 1979, was also a passionate amateur photographer.
Nature and landscape
Spanning several decades from the 1930s onwards, Arno Schmidt's skillfully composed images are beyond documentary snapshots. This becomes evident in his many nature and landscape photographs, taken on short trips through Northern Germany, as well as his colour photographs from the sixties and seventies depicting the heathlands around Bargfeld, Schmidt's home village since 1958.
Colour and composition
The Writer as Landscape Photographer illustrates not only Schmidt's love of nature and the landscape of Northern Germany, but also a genuine understanding of the interlinked relationship between colour and composition.
