A Life in High Performance Sport

On 19 December at 19.00, the opening reception for ‘Dima – A Life in High Performance Sport’ takes place at the Galerie für Fotografie in Hanover. The showcase will subsequently be on display until 13 January 2019.

Exhilarating triumphs and painful defeats: Dimitri Peters, also known as ‘Dima’, has experienced them both. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the German judoka secured a bronze medal; four years later, he failed to qualify for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. For seven years, photographer Michael Neugebauer accompanied the athlete through the highs and lows of his remarkable career.


The resulting photo series gives insight into Peters’ journey by capturing different moments of his professional as well as personal life. Born in Siberia in 1984, ‘Dima’ emigrated to Germany at the age of eight. His story has often been regarded as a prime example for competitive sports as a facilitator of successful integration. A dedicated family man, Peters planned his follow-on-career a long time ago: in September 2017, he retired from the world of competitive sports, and is currently training as a fire chief and emergency paramedic at the Hanover Professional Fire Department.
