'Pixel Project' Ruhr Valley

July 7, 2014

An exhibition based on the project 'Pixelprojekt_Ruhrgebiet' is currently on display at the Science Park in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
The exhibition, which consists of the project's newly-added photographs taken in 2013/14, will continue until 8 November 2014.

Pixelprojekt_Ruhrgebiet was founded in 2003 by initially 27 photographers following in the visual traditions of the Magnum agency. The aim of the project was to create a digital, on-line collection of photographs that would serve as a 'regional memory' of the Ruhr area.

This year, a total of 23 series created by 20 photographers have been added to the project's digital collection. The corresponding exhibition contains printed excerpts of each series – making the sheer dimensions of the usually solely digital project palpable.

Having started with 32 series by 34 photographers in its first year, the project has grown to encompass 417 series by 258 photographers – resulting in around 8,000 single images. Pixelprojekt_Ruhrgebiet not only offers a unique overview of the German Ruhr Valley region, but also represents an insight into the evolution of contemporary photography.
