The automobile has come to symbolise the American Dream and the associated urge for freedom. It is therefore hardly surprising that renowned US photographer Lee Friedlander (born 1934) dedicated two projects to the subject – America by Car and The New Cars 1964. Both series are now on show in Amsterdam.
America by Car documents Friedlander's countless road trips through the United States over the past years. Others may have explored the theme in the past, yet Friedlander succeeds in surprising the viewer with an entirely original approach.
The New Cars 1964 by contrast is a much earlier, now rediscovered series. Commissioned by fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar, Friedlander photographed every car model introduced in 1964.
