Emil Gataullin wins the 2014 Alfred Fried Photography Award
On the occasion of the International Day of Peace on September 21 2014, and within the frame work of a celebration organized by the Austrian Parliament, the 2014 Alfred Fried Photography Award for the best photo dedicated to the theme of peace, was given to the Russian photographer Emil Gataullin. The Award is worth €5000.

Equipped with an analogue camera, Emil Gataullin (42) travelled throughout the Russian interior capturing people and moments in striking black and white photographs, in apparently everyday situations, at peace with themselves and with their world. The winning photo reflects our current age: a swing doing full circle with two people standing up side down on it, in a world that's upside down.

Taken from his Towards the Horizon series, the photo will be exhibited at the Austrian Parliament for one year. “Permanent peace can only happen in a democratically organized society, with equality and solidarity. For this reason, an Award that deals with peace is well placed at the Parliament, at the heart of the democracy,” says Doris Bures, President of the Austrian National Assembly.
