Photographer Narelle Autio's latest body of work is on display at the Stills Gallery in Sydney until 25th August: ‘Water Hole’ is a series of evocative underwater photographs taken on Autio’s travels through Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia. In these dry and remote landscapes, she sought out water holes – small, isolated bodies of water dotted around the Australian desert.
Low light and deep silence
Characteristically, these ‘islands of water’ have parts which are particularly dark and still, and can reach great depths, offering swimmers very little light. Diving into these still waters is like a return to prehistoric times, with alien landscapes and ancient creatures. Autio's images show a breathtaking underwater landscape – and a dark world of fantasy.
