The Stills Gallery in Sydney is showing the works of photographer Mark Kimber in the exhibition ‘The Pale Mirror’, open until 6th October 2012. Light and dramatics are important features in Kimber's work, and lend a filmic atmosphere to his pictures: One image depicts a suburb steeped in blinding white light, akin to a UFO abduction scene in a sci-fi movie. In his landscapes, too, he directs lights in the style of an emergency scene in a disaster movie.
The material basis for these atmospheric images are hand-built models, which Kimber then photographs with an ordinary plastic camera. Instead of an ‘objective’ record, the artist sees his photographs as an interpreted version of reality – with the exploration of this concept forming the basis for many of his works.
