Exemplary use of photography
Granted every year since 1971 for the “exemplary use of photography in journalism”, the award was created in honour of Dr. Erich Salomon, the greatest photographer of the Weimar Republic, who was significantly responsible for stimulating the development of modern photojournalism.

With Gerd Ludwig, the DGPh is recognizing one of the most acclaimed photojournalist's in the world, who has environmental issues and the transformation of the former Soviet Republics at the heart of his work. His report on the Chernobyl nuclear reactor catastrophe is considered a milestone of contemporary photojournalism.
