Andréa Holzherr, curator of the 5th Mannheim Ludwigshafen Heidelberg Photo Festival, has put together an exhibition titled "Deutschlandreise", to be presented at the Raum für Fotografie Zephyr in Mannheim, within the framework of the festival.
Journeys of exploration
As soon as photography became mobile, photographers became explorers. They started out by accompanying scientific expeditions, and since the beginning of the twentieth century have travelled primarily on behalf of the international press. The reportages they produce were either commissioned assignments or projects taken on at their own, personal initiative. The photographic exploration of the world also has a long tradition at Magnum.
How are things looking in Germany in this election year, 2013? This was the question asked to four Magnum photographers, Olivia Arthur, Peter van Agtmael, Paolo Pellegrin and Moises Saman: they travelled throughout the different regions of Germany during the winter and spring of 2013, to get a personal sense of Germany and the Germans, and to capture it in images.
