Closed Cities

October 17, 2013

In collaboration with Galerie im Taxispalais, Innsbruck, the Galerie foto-forum, Bozen, is presenting works by Gregor Sailer. The exhibition opens on October 22, 2013
Presented by Galerie foto-forum, “Closed Cities” is the latest project by Tyrolean artist Gregor Sailer (born in Schwaz in 1980, living and working in Innsbruck and Vomp). In this series, Sailer focuses on the phenomenon of closed cities, hermetically sealed off from the outside world – artificially-created urban areas, far from any other form of civilization, surrounded by inhospitable nature or by very high fences. These cities are places where raw materials are extracted, refugee camps and the, so called, Gated Communities of the wealthy.

Between 2010 and 2012, the photographer used a large-format, analogue camera to take documentary-style pictures of the diamond city of Mirny in Siberia, the oil city of Neft Daslari in Azerbaijan, the gas city of Ras Laffan in Qatar, and the copper city of Chuquicamata in Chile. In addition to these purely mining areas, Sailer photographed refugee camps in Algeria/Western Sahara, and the Nordelta Gated Community in Argentina.

The opening will take place on October 22, 2013, at 19:00, with Gregor Sailer attending.

A 300 page catalogue, with texts (German/English) by Wencke Hertzsch, Walter Moser and Margit Zuckriegl, and 151 colour pictures, has been published by Kehrer Verlag, Heidelberg 2012
