Working with the Leica M9, Carlos Javier Ortiz has documented the fight for prospects in the suburbs of Chicago.
Gang warfare, poverty, drugs: Chicago is the only American metropolis with a growing homicide rate. Increasing numbers of youths are drawn into an intricate system of gangs, which holds up a fragile order based on armed violence. Innocent bystanders, too, can easily become victims of violence – such as Ondelee, whose life will never be the same following an incident at a birthday party. Supported by the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, Ortiz has created a riveting reportage – featured in LFI 6/2013.
