Visitors of the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt will be shown a direct connection between painting and photography, in the exhibition "Gustave Caillebotte – an Impressionist and Photography", from 18th October 2012 to 20th January 2013. Around fifty of Caillebotte's paintings and drawings will be displayed alongside 150 photographs from the late 19th and early 20th century.

The exhibition illustrates Caillebotte's pioneering role in establishing a new visual approach: His radical, very modern images had a highly photographic quality – partly due to composition and perspective, but also through using themes of movement and abstraction, anticipating a photographic way of 'seeing'  before it became established in the medium itself.
