‘The English Seen by Tony Ray-Jones’ features images taken in the period from 1966 to 1969, when Tony Ray-Jones – intrigued by the eccentricities of English social customs – travelled across Britain to document what he saw as a disappearing way of life.
Martin Parr cites Tony Ray-Jones (1941–1971) as one of his most important artistic influences. In the process of revisiting the late photographer’s contact sheets, Parr found a number of previously unseen images. These new discoveries are now presented alongside iconic early works, including vintage prints from the collection of the Martin Parr Foundation.
The exhibition coincides with the release of the photo book: ‘Tony Ray-Jones’.
