Czech-born photographer Markéta Luskačová has lived in the UK since 1975. In 1976, she took her first trip to North East England to visit fellow photographer Chris Killip. It was during this stay that she discovered Whitley Bay, a small seaside town a few miles outside of Newcastle. Luskačová found herself fascinated by the staunch determination of local families to enjoy a day out at the beach, regardless of the harsh weather. Over the next four years, she returned to document the area time and again – culminating in her famous series ‘By the Sea: Photographs from the North East, 1976-1980’, which is now on view at the Martin Parr Foundation.
The exhibition is complemented by a photo book of the same title, released by RRB Photobooks in an edition of 600 – including 100 copies with a signed gelatin silver print.
