Sander dealt quite deliberately with artistic personalities, classifying them in their own particular group within 20th century society. The Artists includes 90 of his images covering the art and culture scenes of the twenties and the thirties – including, for example, authors, actors, architects and musicians.
Some of those presented were among his closest friends and acquaintances. The Kölner Progessiven (Cologne Progressives) is represented with particularly well-known personalities, such as Anton Räderscheidt.
In addition to the motifs by August Sander, the exhibition presents a selection of paintings and drawings by the Kölner Progressiven. They belong to the private collection of Gerd Sander and are accessible to the public for this exhibition exclusively.
