Bill Brandt: Shadow and Light

Share:

Until August 12, 2013 the Edward Steichen Photography Galleries in the Museum of Modern Art, New York, is proud to present Brandt’s finest prints and the arc of their evolution.

This survey takes a long-overdue, in-depth look at one of the true giants of modern photography. Brandt (1904–1983) was born in Hamburg, Germany, to a British father and German mother.

Brandt is a founding figure in photography’s modernist traditions, and this exhibition represents a major critical reevaluation of his heralded career. Brandt’s distinctive vision—his ability to present the mundane world as fresh and strange—emerged in London in the 1930s, and drew from his time in the Paris studio of Man Ray. His visual explorations of the society, landscape, and literature of England are indispensable to any understanding of photographic history and, arguably, to our understanding of life in Britain during the middle of the 20th century.

In conjunction with this exhibition there will be gallery conversations on march 13 at 11:30 am and march 24, 2013 at 1:30 pm.
