Life on Mars

Share:

The exhibition ‘ma.r.s’ by photography artist Thomas Ruff is open at the Rüdiger Schöttle gallery in Munich from 15th September to 3rd November 2012. It is the photographer’s most recent series. The project is based on images published by NASA, taken by a Mars probe which has been circling the planet since 2005.

Ruff’s technique
The space probe’s sober black-and-white images are of alien landscapes with dry riverbeds, mountains and craters. For Thomas Ruff, this archive of scientific imagery becomes the basis for his work – he selects those images that appeal to his aesthetic judgement, compresses the (originally vertical) images into a diagonal angle, so that the viewer seems to be approaching the planet for imminent landing. He also uses a 3D effect, primarily used in film making, and so presents the viewer with spatial, three dimensional photographs of an alien world.
