From October 26 to December 21, 2019, the Robert Morat Gallery in Berlin presents the exhibition ‘Tempora Morte’ with works by Lia Darjes.

When asked about her artistic influences, Lia Darjes has a very specific answer: countless visits to Berlin’s ‘Gemäldegalerie’ art museum. The impact of these sojourns into the world of classic paintings is very much apparent in the photographer’s new book, ‘Tempora Morte’. Created in the Russian city of Kaliningrad in 2016, the series comprises images of roadside market stalls, set up by old women who hope to top up their meagre pensions by selling produce grown in their own gardens or foraged from the nearby woods.

In theory, these images could be described as documentary photographs; equally, the series might be classed as a visual commentary on the topic of old-age poverty or micro-economies. However, with the skilful use of a small flash and underexposed background, the photographer transforms each humble display into a mesmeric work of art, reminiscent of the opulent still-life studies of the Old Dutch Masters.

The opening of the exhibition takes place on Friday, October 25, at 7 pm.
