Helmut Newton

May 29, 2014

Two exhibitions by photography legend Helmut Newton will be showing at the Museum für Fotografie in Berlin from 5 June to 16 November 2014
At the end of June, the Helmut Newton Foundation celebrates its ten-year anniversary. When it was first established, Helmut Newton selected the two projects Us and Them and Sex and Landscapes for the opening exhibition. Ten years on, the Foundation's president June Newton has decided to mark the anniversary with the very same selection of photographs. Her choice emphasises the continuity of the Foundation's efforts, as well as the timeless nature of both Newton's work and the couple's collaborations.

The joint exhibition and book project Us and Them was intrinsically a photographic diary of the couple's life together. It consists of mutual, sometimes intimate portraits, self portraits as well as images of actors, artists and other prominent figures of the 1980s and 90s.

Sex and Landscapes reveals a different facet of the photographer. Scenes of an overcast sea, breaking waves at Monte Carlo Bay or images of Berlin's Grunewald Lake are juxtaposed with neo-baroque Madonna statues in provincial Italy and provocative scenes in which a female cast plays out roles of sexual obsession.
