“Missing Links & Academic Voids”

January 20, 2014

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie (German Photographic Association) is organizing an international symposium at the Berlinischen Galerie from March 6 to 8, 2014
Various subjects will be dealt with at the symposium, in honour of the 175th jubilee year of photography: Where are the blanks in the history of photography? Which needs are deemed urgent today, and which new approaches are necessary to open up new directions in photographic research? Which were the real turning points during photography's 175 year-old history? And how to classify and evaluate the extremely profound transformation of the media since digitalisation, from a historic perspective?

The programme looks at exemplary case studies covering the whole breadth of the history of photographic research in both theory and in application. On the whole, research today is divided into separate fields, barely allowing representatives of each any opportunity for exchange and discussion.

Within the framework of the symposium, the 2014 DGPh Kulturpreis will be awarded to Prof. Dr. Gottfried Jäger on the evening of March 7.
