“Afrika hin und zurück” (Africa, there and back again) is the title of the exhibition being shown from August 25 to October 21, 2012, at the Folkwang Museum in Essen. The photographic collection presents works by Wolfgang Weber, Robert Lebeck, Malick Sidibé and Pieter Hugo. The time span covers 80 years, from colonial times to the present.
The exhibition begins chronologically with pictures by Wolfgang Weber, who published adventurous, African reportages in the 1920's, at the time of colonial/political supremacy; and while Germaine Krull (Shouldn't his/her name be in the list above as well?) shows the military relevance of the French colonies during World War II, the interest of Robert Lebeck focusses on the ambivalence between political independence and continuous dependence.
