Strange world

The WestLicht Gallery in Vienna will be showing a retrospective of the work of Roger Ballen from 22 February to 28 April 2013. Moving fluidly between documentary and fantasy, his images are both disturbing and captivating. Born 1950 in New York, Ballen – who has been living in South Africa since the early 1980s – is amongst the most original and influential photography artists of his generation.

The exhibition provides a comprehensive overview of various creative periods from the Sixties to today. The images, taken throughout his travels across the world, often show influences of street photography, from the intense portraits of his 'Boyhood' series to his images of South African migrant workers – but it is the the haunting and the grotesque that thread their way through most of his work.
