Commemorating the ninetieth birthday of photographer Tony Vaccaro, Berlin’s Willy-Brandt-Haus will be hosting a retrospective of his work. The exhibition, entitled “Tony Vaccaro. Retrospektive - 70 Jahre Fotografie”, will be open from November 22nd, 2012, to February 27th, 2013. In Germany, Vaccaro is mostly known for his images of the second world war. A photojournalist for US magazine “The Stars and Stripes”, he documented, amongst others, the Berlin Airlift, and remained in Germany until 1949.
After his return to the US, Tony Vaccaro worked as a fashion photographer for magazines such as Flair, Look, Time, Life, and Venture, soon gaining further recognition for his portraits of stars such as Marlon Brando, Charlie Chaplin, Maria Callas, Marlene Dietrich, Sophia Loren – to name but a few. In 1963, Vaccaro was awarded the gold medal for Best Fashion Photograph by the Art Directors’ Club in New York.
