Introduced in 1992 as the successor to the R5, the new R7 featured a higher maximum shutter speed than its predecessor, as well as a 10 mm taller camera body. The base plate of the camera had been expanded in order to accomodate the R7's additional electronics, which for the first time were based on micro-processors.
Other enhancements included an automatic DX film sensitivity setting with manual override, increased metering sensitivity and improved manual exposure compensation. In addition, the camera offered advanced flash control functions.
