Real Surreal

April 1, 2016

From 1 April to 24 July 2016 the Museum Bellerive in Zurich, Switzerland, presents masterpieces of avant-garde photography in the exhibition ‘Real Surreal’.
Created in co-operation with the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, the exhibition ‘Real Surreal – Masterpieces of Avantgarde Photography’ leads the viewer through the ‘Neues Sehen’ movement in Germany, surrealism in France, and the Avantgarde movement in Prague. Themes include portrait and nude photography, architectural and product photography as well as experimental approaches. The exhibition is showing at the Museum Bellerive in Zurich from 1 April to 24 July 2016.

Based on a previous exhibition of exemplary 19th century photographs, which showcased the differences and commonalities within the Neues Sehen movement, the Museum Bellerive went another step further to provide the viewer with a ‘new way of seeing’: featuring original prints by renowned photographers, the presentation allows us to rediscover the breadth and multi-dimensional nature of an approach that moves between the real and the surreal.

The selection of around 200 photographs is complemented by historical photo books,
newspapers and rare artist books, providing a comprehensive experience of the exhibition’s theme. Several cinematic works are being screened as part of the exhibition to highlight the fruitful relationship between avant-garde photography and film-making during this era.
