An exhibition by Bernd Nicolaisen continues at the Krypta Grossmünster in Zurich until 21 August.

Swiss photographer Bernd Nicolaisen (*1959) currently presents his unique images of glaciers, volcanoes and caves, taken in Iceland between 2004 and 2014. A number of the 20 large-format prints are displayed in lightboxes.

The appeal of Nicolaisen's images is intensified by their extreme lighting conditions: the photographer is driven by a quest for the perfect level of sufficient residual light. Monochrome compositions reveal the subtlest nuances of glacial blues and modulated greys. Nicolaisen's explorations of his theme, particularly of frozen landscapes and ice, capture intricate surface structures in a manner that is both evocative and documentary.

The exhibition is complemented by an accompanying book, released by Hatje Cantz Publishing.
